The two skid steer attachment hazards that reach the operator most often are hydraulic line failures and thrown material. Pressurized hoses run along the lift arms, right past your cab. Augers, grapples, and mulchers pick up rock, brush, and wood, and some of it comes straight back at the machine. Both hazards point at the same weak spot: the open doorway in front of your face. Covering that opening with a hard polycarbonate door is the most direct fix there is.
Why the front opening takes the worst of it
Think about where you sit on a skid steer. The attachment mounts to a plate a few feet in front of your boots. The lift arms run down both sides of the cab, carrying hydraulic hoses with them. Everything the machine digs, grabs, or grinds happens directly in front of the operator opening, at or below eye level.
A tractor operator sits up high, behind the work. A skid steer operator sits inside the work. The cab structure protects your sides and top, but plenty of machines left the factory with nothing across the front except open air.
That opening is exactly where an auger slings a rock chip, where a branch whips loose from a grapple, and where a mulcher sends chips flying. It is also the closest gap to the hoses feeding your attachment.
Hydraulic lines sit closer than you think
Follow the hoses on your machine sometime. They run from the pump, along the lift arms, past the cab, and down to the quick couplers at the front, inches from where you sit. High-flow attachments add more lines and more fittings.
Hoses age. They rub against steel every time the arms cycle, they bake in the sun, and they stiffen in the cold. Fittings loosen with vibration. When a line finally lets go, it happens fast and without much warning.
A failure does not have to be dramatic to be dangerous. A pinhole leak sprays hydraulic fluid as a fine mist under pressure, and that fluid is hot. A burst hose can whip and dump fluid across the front of the machine, right where an open cab leaves you exposed.
Two habits worth keeping. First, look over your hoses and fittings before attachment work, especially where they flex or rub. Second, never search for a suspected leak with your hands. Use a piece of cardboard and let the leak show itself on that instead. A hard door between you and the lines adds a barrier that is working every hour the machine runs.
What augers, grapples, and mulchers actually throw
Every attachment has its own way of sending material back at you.
Augers. The spinning flight lifts spoil out of the hole and slings it in a circle. In rocky ground that includes rock chips. In winter it includes frozen clods that behave more like stone than dirt. Old fence lines add wire, staples, and buried scrap to the mix.
Grapples. Brush under load stores spring tension. When a bundle shifts or a branch pulls free, the loose end whips, and it whips toward the machine as often as away from it. Logs roll and kick when the grapple bites, and small limbs snap off and fly.
Mulchers. A mulcher rotor spins fast and breaks wood by force. Most of the material goes down, but some travels back toward the carrier. Deflectors and chains on the attachment knock down a lot of it. They do not seal the path to the cab. None of this is rare or exotic. It is ordinary attachment work on an ordinary day. The question is what sits between that work and your face.
Open cab, vinyl cover, glass, or polycarbonate
Here is how the common front-opening setups stack up for attachment work.

The hammer test, in plain terms

Cover the sides while you are at it
Debris does not only come head-on. Brush rakes down the sides of the cab in land clearing, and augers sling material in a full circle. If your machine has open side openings, side window panels close them off with the same heavy-duty polycarbonate, and they help the enclosure hold cab temperature too.

A five-minute check before attachment work
Run through this before you start the day:
- Look over hydraulic hoses and fittings, especially where they flex, rub, or pass near the cab.
- Check quick couplers for seepage, and wipe them clean before connecting.
- Confirm the attachment’s own guarding, deflectors, and chains are in place and intact.
- Latch the door fully and check that the weather seal sits tight.
- Walk the work area for wire, scrap, and loose rock before you put a spinning attachment into it.
- Keep bystanders well clear of the throw zone, front and sides.
