A polycarbonate skid steer door takes hits that shatter tempered glass. When a chunk of wood, a rock, or a snapped chain hits a Lexan polycarbonate door, the sheet flexes, soaks up the blow, and stays in the frame. Tempered glass breaks into thousands of small pieces in an instant and leaves the cab wide open, right when debris is still flying. Glass does resist scratches better. But for the work a skid steer actually does, polycarbonate is the safer door.

Why impact resistance decides this
Think about where your door sits. It faces the attachment. Every mulcher head, brush cutter, grapple, and bucket you run throws material straight back at the front of the cab. The door is the only thing between your face and whatever bounces off that attachment.
A car windshield mostly worries about gravel at highway speed. A skid steer door catches fist-sized chunks of oak, fence staples, rock shards, and the occasional broken cutting tooth. The two materials handle that job in completely different ways.
How tempered glass fails
Tempered glass is heat-treated so that when it breaks, it crumbles into small pellet-shaped pieces instead of long blades. That design makes sense in a car side window. It keeps broken glass from cutting people in a crash.
In a skid steer, that same design works against you. Tempered glass is strong against slow, even pressure, but a sharp strike in the wrong spot releases all that stored tension at once. The whole panel lets go in a fraction of a second. There is no crack you can finish the day with. One moment you have a door, the next you have glass pellets in your lap and an open hole facing a running mulcher.
Then comes the second cost. You cannot keep cutting brush with no door, so the machine sits while you hunt down a replacement panel. For older machines, that hunt can take weeks.
How polycarbonate handles the same hit
Lexan polycarbonate is a ductile material. Instead of storing tension and letting go, it bends, absorbs the strike, and springs back. Impact strength is many times that of glass, which is why the same material shows up in machine guarding and riot shields.

The scratch tradeoff, straight up
Here is the honest part. Glass has a harder surface than polycarbonate. If you drag a dry, gritty rag across both, the glass will look better afterward. Anyone who tells you polycarbonate never scratches is selling something.
What actually happens on real machines is this. Operators who wipe dust off a dry polycarbonate door with a dirty glove build up fine swirl marks over the seasons. Operators who rinse the grit off first, then clean with a soft cloth and mild soap, keep their doors clear for years. Never use ammonia cleaners or dry-wipe abrasive dust.

Weight, hinges, and your back
Polycarbonate runs less than half the weight of glass at the same thickness. That shows up in three places.
First, installation handling. Lower panel weight can make positioning easier, but model-specific mounting steps determine the required tools and whether a helper is recommended. Second, hardware life. Less door weight means less sag load on hinges and latches over thousands of open-close cycles. Third, the machine itself. Every pound off the front of the cab is a pound the loader arms and door hardware never have to fight.
Cold weather behavior
Cold is where cheap clear plastics get a bad name. Acrylic, the stuff of hardware store storm windows, turns brittle when the temperature drops and can crack from strikes it would have survived in July.
Lexan polycarbonate is a different material. It holds most of its impact strength well below zero, which matters when you are pushing snow and the plow kicks a frozen ice chunk back at the cab. Tempered glass does not gain anything in winter either. Its shatter behavior is the same in January as in June, except now the wind is coming through the hole at 10 below.
An enclosed polycarbonate door also does the comfort job. Closing up the cab helps regulate temperature, which keeps you productive through a full winter day instead of frozen out by 2 pm.
Match the door to the work
