If you run a skid steer with kids and animals around the yard, farm equipment safety comes down to two things working together: steady habits and a clear view from the seat. The habits mean the machine shuts down before anyone comes close, and every child knows where to stand while it runs. The view is where your equipment can help you. Habits come first, and they cost nothing
A family farm yard does double duty. It is a workspace in the morning and a play area by afternoon, and the machine does not care which one it is. That is why habits matter more than any product, ours included.
The core habit is simple. When anyone approaches, you stop the work, lower the attachment, and shut the machine down before they get close. Kids learn fast. If the rule is “the machine turns off before you walk up,” they will hold you to it.
The second habit is the headcount. Before you climb in, know where every child is, and have one adult own that answer while you work. Guessing is not knowing.
Why a clear view from the seat matters so much
A skid steer keeps you busy. You are watching the bucket, the ground, the load, and the path ahead. Anything that makes the rest of the yard harder to see, like scratched glass, fog on a cold morning, or a frame across your window, adds work your eyes have to do.
Kids and animals do not move like adults. A dog cuts behind the machine to chase a barn cat. A six-year-old runs a straight line toward you to show off a frog. You want to catch that motion at the edge of your vision as early as possible, and a wide, clear sightline is what gives you the chance.

A yard awareness routine you can actually keep
Print this, talk it through at supper, and keep it boring and repeatable:
- Walk the yard before you start. Look for toys, bikes, open gates, and any spot where a child or animal could slip in behind you.
- One adult owns the headcount. While the machine runs, one named adult always knows where every kid is. Trade the job when you trade tasks.
- Set fixed watching spots. Pick places kids can see the machine from, behind a fence or up on the porch, and make those the only watching spots.
- Engine off before anyone walks up. Attachment down, engine off, then wave them in. Every time, no exceptions, even for a two-minute chat.
- Eye contact before you move. If anyone is near the work area, get eye contact and a wave before the machine rolls.
- Count the animals too. Dogs follow the action, and cattle and horses spook. Know where they are before you swing a load.
- Park it dead. Bucket flat on the ground, engine off, key out, door closed. A parked machine should leave nothing for curious hands to find.
Teach the machine as a rule, not a mystery
Kids are drawn to what they are shut out of. Take five minutes with the machine parked and off, let them sit in the seat, and show them what you can and cannot see from up there. Have them stand where they like to watch from and ask, “Can you see my face?”
That one exercise turns your rules from “because I said so” into something they understand. It also teaches the single most useful idea for kids around farm equipment: if you cannot see the operator’s eyes, the operator cannot see you.
