Polycarbonate in Cold Weather: Does Lexan Get Brittle?

Polycarbonate handles cold weather better than almost any clear material you can put on a skid steer. Lexan polycarbonate keeps most of its impact strength well below zero, so it still flexes and absorbs a hit in the middle of January instead of cracking. Glass goes the other way. It is brittle in any season, and deep cold only makes a shatter more likely when something hard hits it. If you run a machine through northern-plains winters, that difference decides your door.

Here is where the “plastic gets brittle” myth comes from, what actually happens to each material when the temperature drops, and how to set your machine up for the cold months.

Where the brittle-plastic myth comes from

The myth is not made up out of thin air. Plenty of operators have watched a clear plastic panel crack in the cold. The problem is which plastic it was.

Acrylic is the usual suspect. It is the stuff of hardware store storm windows and cheap equipment covers, and it does turn brittle when temperatures drop. An acrylic panel that takes a bump fine in July can split from the same bump in January. Thin vinyl curtain enclosures are worse. They stiffen, crack at the zippers, and flap apart in a prairie wind.

So when someone tells you a plastic door will not survive a Dakota winter, they are usually remembering acrylic or vinyl. Lexan polycarbonate is a different material, and it behaves differently when the mercury drops.

Why polycarbonate stays tough in the cold

Polycarbonate is a ductile material. Instead of storing tension and letting go the way brittle materials do, it bends under a strike, soaks up the energy, and springs back. That is the property that matters, and polycarbonate holds onto it in cold weather far better than the materials it gets confused with.

This is not a lab curiosity. It is the same reason polycarbonate is the standard choice for machine guarding and riot shields, gear that has to take abuse outdoors in every season. A material that quit working in the cold would never survive in those jobs.

What winter does to glass

Glass does not get a winter upgrade. It is a brittle material at every temperature, and cold works against it, not for it.

Tempered glass is built to crumble into small pellets when it fails, and that failure still happens all at once. A sharp strike in the wrong spot releases the whole panel in a fraction of a second. Cold makes that brittle behavior worse, not better, and winter is exactly when the hard hits come. Frozen chunks kicked back by a plow edge. Ice sliding off a grain bin roof. A bucket corner tapping the door on a machine with stiff, cold hydraulics.

There is also the day-to-day abuse nobody plans for. A frozen door slammed hard because the seal iced up. A panel that gets hot air blasted on one side while the other side sits at air temperature. Glass takes all of that badly. And when it lets go, you are cleaning pellets out of the cab at 10 below with a wide open hole where your door used to be.

Winter is when the door earns its money

Think about what a skid steer actually does between November and March on a northern-plains operation.

Feeding cattle every morning, with frozen manure and ice pack breaking loose around the bucket. Pushing snow off yards and lots, where the plow or blower kicks ice chunks straight back at the cab. Clearing frozen brush and deadfall, where every branch is stiff as rebar. Cold materials break sharp and fly hard. Winter debris is nastier than summer debris, and it is coming at the only clear panel between the work and your face.

That is impact protection. The other half is heat. An open cab in a prairie wind is a productivity problem and a frostbite problem. A sealed polycarbonate door closes up the enclosure, helps regulate cab temperature, and turns a brutal day into a normal one. Cold weather care for a polycarbonate door

A polycarbonate door does not need much in winter, but the habits below keep it clear for years. The surface is softer than glass, so the goal is simple: never grind grit or ice across it dry.

  • Never chip ice off with a metal scraper. Run the cab heater a few minutes, let the ice release, then push it off with a gloved hand or a soft plastic scraper.
  • Rinse or brush off grit and salt spray before wiping. Dragging a dry, dirty glove across the door is what causes swirl marks, not the winter itself.
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. Skip ammonia glass cleaners.
  • Check the weather seal gasket before freeze-up. A good seal keeps meltwater from refreezing the door shut.
  • Work the latch and hinges and add a shot of lubricant so you are not forcing frozen hardware.
  • If you run snow, add the electric wiper kit. Wet snow on a manual wiper gets old by the second driveway.
