Skid Steer Winter Comfort: The Full Cold-Weather Stack

Skid steer winter comfort comes down to two moves: seal the cab, then outfit it. The full stack is a shatterproof polycarbonate door ($1,395 to $1,795 depending on your machine), side window panels ($399), a battery-wired cab heater ($119), an electric wiper kit ($229), and a 22 inch LED light bar ($99). All in, most machines land between $2,241 and $2,641. This guide walks through each piece, why it earns its spot, and what the whole bundle costs.

Why an open cab ends your winter early

An open skid steer cab in January is a wind tunnel with a seat in it. The machine runs fine at 10 below. The operator does not. Your hands go numb on the controls, your eyes water, and by early afternoon you are cutting the day short because you cannot take it anymore.

That is money walking away. Winter is earning season for anyone with a bucket: snow removal, feedlot work, winter site prep, firewood. The jobs are there. The machines that do them are the ones with a sealed, warm cab.

The fix is not one product. It is a short stack of parts that work together. The door and panels hold the heat. The heater makes it. The wiper and lights keep you seeing what you are doing. Each kit has its own instructions and requirements, and all of it stays useful for years.

The winter comfort stack, piece by piece

Here is the full setup in the order you should build it.

1. The door: seal the front first

Everything starts with the door. It is the biggest opening in the cab and the one taking wind straight at your chest all day.

Ours is the Original Shatterproof Polycarbonate Lexan Door. Every door is CNC-cut for your exact make and model, so there is no guesswork about fit. Mounting varies by model: some kits use existing factory points, while others require drilling and bolting where the included instructions direct. We build doors for ASV, Bobcat, CAT, Case, Gehl, John Deere, Kubota, Mustang, Manitou, New Holland, Takeuchi, and Terex, including older machines like the Case 1840 and 1845C that nobody else builds enclosures for.

A door does more in winter than block wind. Frozen chunks, ice sliding off the bucket, brush buried under snow: cold weather work throws more debris at the cab, not less. 2. Side window panels: close the gaps

A door alone leaves two big openings on the sides of the cab, and warm air finds them fast. Side Window Panels run $399 and close off those openings so the cab actually seals.

Think of them as the difference between a windbreak and a room. With the door and panels in place, the cab becomes a small, enclosed space that holds heat instead of leaking it. The enclosure helps regulate cab temperature in both directions, which is why the same setup keeps the cab cooler in July dust season too.

3. Cab heater: make the heat

With the cab sealed, heating it is easy. Our Cab Heater is a $119 electric ceramic heater and fan with a swivel base. It wires directly to your machine’s battery, so there is no fuel bottle in the cab, no flame, and no fumes. Flip the switch and it runs.

Point the swivel base at your hands on brutal mornings, or at the door to help cut fog and frost on the inside. It also runs as a plain fan, so it stays on the machine all year. 4. Electric wiper kit: see through the slop

Winter work is wet work. Snow, slush, and freezing spray hit the outside of the door, and no heater can reach them. The Electric Wiper Kit runs $229 and was designed specifically for our skid steer doors. The kit comes with everything you need to install it.

5. LED light bar: stretch the short days

In December you run out of daylight before you run out of work. Our 22 inch LED light bar runs $99 and fits to light up the pile, the pad, or the driveway in front of you.

Early mornings and late afternoons are when winter jobs actually happen, especially snow contracts. Good forward light means you see the curb, the chain, and the frozen rut before they surprise you.

6. A latch you can work with gloves on

Small thing, big deal at 10 below. Our doors use a simple mechanical handle and locking latch, the kind you can grab and throw with an insulated glove on. No fiddly buttons. The latch comes with the door, along with keys, so the cab locks up at night.

Two habits keep it working all winter. Knock the ice off the latch area before you close up, and keep the weather seal gasket clean so the door shuts square. A door that closes tight is a door that holds heat.

The stack at a glance

The accessories together run $846. Add your door and the complete stack lands between $2,241 and $2,641, depending on your machine. On a tight budget, build it in stages. Door first, because nothing else works without it. Panels and heater next, because together they make the cab warm. Wiper and light bar as the season demands.

What’s in the box

No hunting the hardware store for missing pieces. Here is what shows up:

• The door: CNC-cut heavy-duty polycarbonate, hinges, handle and locking latch with keys, weather seal gasket, nuts, bolts, washers, and printed instructions. Required tools and mounting steps vary by model; some kits bolt straight on and others require drilling and bolting.
• Side Window Panels: panels sized for your machine’s side openings, with mounting hardware.
• Cab Heater: the ceramic heater and fan unit with swivel base and battery wiring.
• Electric Wiper Kit: the wiper motor, arm, blade, and everything you need to install it on your new door.

Our busy season starts at the beginning of September, and the first cold snap always catches somebody with an open cab. Doors ship UPS 3 Day Air, $150 flat, typically 3 business days (not guaranteed). Order in the fall and you are sealed up before the weather turns instead of losing paid days waiting on it.

One more winter note: the door is the piece you will still own in ten years. It carries the limited lifetime warranty against door failure or breakage, and hardware carries a 3-month warranty. A sealed, heated machine also brings more the day you sell it, because the next owner sees a loader that works twelve months a year.
