How to Clean Polycarbonate: Cleaners Safe for Lexan Doors

Here is how to clean polycarbonate: warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft microfiber cloth. Rinse the door first to float the grit off, wash gently in straight lines, rinse again, and blot dry. Never use ammonia glass cleaners, abrasive pads, or solvents, and never wipe the door dry. That is the whole method, and it is the same one we use on every door before it leaves our shop.

The short list: cleaners that are safe for Lexan

Polycarbonate does not need special products. It needs gentle ones. Everything on this list is cheap and probably already in your shop or kitchen.

  • Mild dish soap and warm water. The workhorse. A few drops in a bucket is plenty. It lifts dust, mud, pollen, and road film without touching the material itself.
  • Plain water. For a mid-day rinse, water alone does more good than any spray. Flooding the surface is what carries grit away.
  • Ammonia-free cleaners labeled safe for plastics. Some cleaners are made for plastic windows and headlights. If the label says ammonia-free and safe for polycarbonate or acrylic, it is fine. If the label does not say, treat it as unsafe.
  • Isopropyl alcohol, for spots only. Sap, tar, and sticker glue come off with a little isopropyl on a soft cloth. Work the spot, then rinse with soapy water right away.
  • Plastic polish made for polycarbonate. Not a cleaner, but worth keeping on the shelf. It improves light haze and fine swirl marks when worked in with a soft cloth.

Notice the pattern. Nothing on that list cuts, etches, or dissolves. Polycarbonate is tough clear through, which is why it stops a rock that would shatter tempered glass, but its surface is softer than glass. The right cleaner respects that. What destroys a Lexan door

Most damaged polycarbonate we see was not damaged by work. It was damaged at cleaning time. These are the products and habits that do it:

  • Ammonia glass cleaners. Most blue window sprays contain ammonia, and ammonia attacks polycarbonate. It causes hazing and can weaken the surface over time. The door can end up looking fogged without a single scratch on it.
  • Abrasive pads and powders. Scouring pads, stiff brushes, and gritty cleansers leave permanent marks in one pass. There is no undo.
  • Solvents. Acetone, lacquer thinner, brake cleaner, and paint thinner can craze or soften the surface. Fuel and hydraulic fluid splash belong in the same category. Wipe them off promptly with soapy water.
  • Dry wiping. The number one cause of scratched doors. Dust is fine grit. A dry rag, paper towel, or glove drags that grit across the surface and leaves swirl marks. Wet the door first, every time.
  • Razor blades and ice scrapers. Fine on glass, never on polycarbonate. On frost mornings, use lukewarm water or let the cab heater’s defrost do the work.
  • Bleach and strong degreasers. Harsh chemistry has no place on this material. If a product warns you to wear gloves, keep it off the door.

One habit deserves its own sentence. If you run a wiper across a dry, dusty door, the blade grinds grit in a perfect arc right through your line of sight. Wet door, wiper on. Dry door, wiper off. When you pick up any bottle, check the label for two words: ammonia and abrasive. If either shows up, or the label says nothing about plastics, leave it on the shelf. Big-box accessory stores sell plenty of sprays that are great on glass and wrong for Lexan.

The five-minute wash routine

  1. Rinse the whole door with clean water. Garden hose is ideal. Pressure washer is fine from a few feet back with a wide fan. The goal is to float grit off before anything touches the surface.
  2. Mix the wash. A few drops of dish soap in a bucket of warm water. No more than that.
  3. Wash top to bottom in straight lines. Soft cloth or sponge, light pressure. Do not scrub circles, and do not lean on a stubborn spot. Soak it and come back.
  4. Rinse the soap off completely. Leftover soap dries into streaks.
  5. Blot dry with clean microfiber. Blot or drag lightly. Never buff a nearly dry surface with pressure.
  6. Spot-treat the sticky stuff. Sap, tar, or glue: a little isopropyl on the cloth, work the spot, rinse with soapy water. Done.

Wash the side window panels the same way if your enclosure has them. Same material, same rules.

What to keep on the shop shelf

Set up a small door-care kit once and the right tools are always in reach:

  • One clean bucket, used for the door only, so it never picks up grit from other jobs
  • Basic dish soap
  • Three or four microfiber cloths, washed and kept in a zip bag
  • A soft sponge with no scrub side
  • A small bottle of isopropyl alcohol
  • One tube of plastic polish made for polycarbonate

That is a small kit of cheap, everyday gear, and it protects a door that carries a limited lifetime warranty against door failure or breakage: one free replacement for life for the original owner, under normal conditions. Cleaner damage is the easiest damage to avoid, so avoid it.

Clean right and the door outlasts the machine
