Does Polycarbonate Scratch? Yes. Here's How to Prevent It

Yes. Polycarbonate can scratch. Its surface is softer than glass, and if you drag grit across it with a dry rag, it will show marks. That is the honest answer, and anyone who tells you different is selling something.

But look at the other side of the trade. Glass resists scratches and then shatters the day a rock, branch, or chain hits it. Polycarbonate takes that same hit and stays in one piece. With a few simple washing habits, a Lexan door stays clear for years. Here is how to care for one, straight from the people who build them.

Why polycarbonate scratches, and why that is the right trade

Every window material makes a trade between surface hardness and impact strength. Glass sits at one end. It is hard on the surface, so sand and dust do not mark it easily. But hard also means brittle. One good hit from a rock thrown by your tires or a branch snapping back, and tempered glass turns into a cab full of pieces.

Polycarbonate sits at the other end. The surface is softer, so it can pick up fine scratches if you treat it like glass. But the material itself is tough clear through. It flexes, absorbs the hit, and stays in the frame. That is why our owner Leighton can swing a hammer into our 1/2” thick CAT D Series door on camera, unedited, and the door shrugs it off.

What actually scratches a Lexan door

Almost every scratched polycarbonate door we have seen was scratched by the operator, not the job. These are the usual causes:

  • Dry wiping. This is the number one cause by far. The door gets dusty, someone grabs a shop rag or their glove and wipes it. The dust is fine grit, the rag drags it across the surface, and you get swirl marks.
  • Paper towels on a dry surface. Paper is wood fiber. It is more abrasive than people think.
  • Ammonia-based glass cleaners. Standard blue window sprays contain ammonia, which attacks polycarbonate over time. It causes hazing and can weaken the surface. Use them long enough and the door looks fogged even with zero scratches.
  • Abrasive pads and powders. Scouring pads, scrub brushes with stiff bristles, and gritty cleansers all leave marks in one pass.
  • Razor blades and scrapers. Fine on glass. Never on polycarbonate, including ice scraping in winter. Use lukewarm water or let the defrost from your cab heater do the work.
  • Running a wiper on a dry, dirty door. The blade grinds the dust across the surface in a perfect arc, so the scratch sits right in your line of sight.
  • Solvents. Acetone, lacquer thinner, brake cleaner, and gasoline splash can craze or soften the surface. Wipe fuel or hydraulic fluid off promptly with soapy water.

Notice what is not on that list: normal work. Brush slapping the door, gravel dust, rain, mud. Day-to-day contact does far less damage than one bad cleaning session.

How to wash a polycarbonate door the right way

The whole job takes five minutes and uses things you already have.

  1. Rinse first, always. Flood the door with clean water to float the grit off before anything touches the surface. A garden hose is perfect. If you use a pressure washer, keep the tip a few feet back and use a wide fan pattern.
  2. Wash with mild soap. A few drops of dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Nothing gritty, nothing with ammonia or bleach.
  3. Use a soft cloth or sponge. Microfiber cloth or a clean soft sponge. Wipe gently in straight lines, top to bottom. Do not scrub in circles and do not press hard on a stubborn spot. Soak it instead.
  4. Rinse again. Get all the soap off so it does not dry into streaks.
  5. Blot dry. Use a clean microfiber cloth and blot or drag it lightly. Never buff a nearly dry surface with pressure.
  6. Deal with sap and tar the gentle way. A soft cloth with a little isopropyl alcohol, applied to the spot and rinsed off right away, handles most sticky stuff. Test a corner first and never let solvents sit.

A note on wipers

A wiper is one of the best upgrades you can put on a polycarbonate door, and one of the fastest ways to scratch it if you use it wrong. The rule is simple: wet door, wiper on. Dry door, wiper off.

Already have scratches? Here is the honest picture

Fine scratches and light haze can usually be improved with a plastic polish made for polycarbonate, worked in with a soft cloth. Deep gouges are permanent. No polish removes them.

Here is the part that matters: scratches do not change what the door does. A scratched polycarbonate door still stops the branch, the rock, and the chain the same as it did on day one.
