A used skid steer door sounds like an easy save. Find one at a salvage yard, bolt it on, get back to work. In practice, used OEM glass doors let a lot of buyers down. Fit is a gamble, condition is a mystery, and there is no warranty when something goes wrong. A new CNC-cut polycarbonate door runs $1,395 to $1,795, ships complete with hardware, and carries a limited lifetime warranty. Once you count freight, parts, and your time, the used door rarely wins.
Here is the full picture, so you can decide with your eyes open.
Why a used door looks like a deal
Salvage yards and auction sites are full of doors pulled off wrecked, burned, or retired machines. The price on the tag looks friendly, and that is the whole appeal.
But the tag is not the whole cost. You pay freight, or you burn a day driving to the yard. You often replace the seal, a hinge, or the latch before the door is usable. And if the glass lets go a month later, you eat the loss and start hunting all over again.
Operators who run the numbers after the fact usually find the “cheap” door cost them close to a new one. The difference is the new one still has years of coverage left, and the used one never had any.
Problem 1: Fit is a gamble
Skid steer doors are not one-size. Manufacturers change cab openings, hinge locations, latch positions, and seal channels between series, and sometimes within a series. A door off a machine that looks just like yours can still miss at the hinge points or the latch. Even a small miss means the door never seals, never latches clean, and rattles every hour you run.
Salvage listings make this worse. “Fits Bobcat” tells you almost nothing. You often cannot confirm the donor machine’s series before you pay, and yards rarely take returns on a door you failed to make fit.
Our doors go the other way. Every door is CNC-cut and precision fit per make and model, with no guesswork. We build doors for ASV, Bobcat, CAT, Case, Gehl, John Deere, Kubota, Mustang, Manitou, New Holland, Takeuchi, and Terex. Problem 2: Condition is a mystery
A used OEM door lived a whole life before you showed up. Years of vibration, slammed latches, pressure washing, and sun. Some of that wear you can see. The worst of it you cannot.
Walk the yard with this checklist:
- Glass edges. Chips at the edge of tempered glass are where failures start. Look hard, because small ones hide under the gasket.
- Frame trueness. Set a straightedge on the frame. A door off a tipped or struck machine is often tweaked just enough to fight you forever.
- Gasket. Press the seal with a thumbnail. Dry, cracked rubber means water and dust in your cab from day one.
- Hinge pins. Lift the door by its edge and feel for slop. Worn pins mean sag, and sag means latch trouble.
- Latch and handle. Cycle it a dozen times. Sticky now means broken later.
Even a careful inspection cannot tell you how much life is left in tempered glass. It looks fine right up to the day it goes to pieces. That is the nature of the material, and it is the core of the case for polycarbonate. We cover it fully in polycarbonate vs tempered glass for skid steer doors.
Poly is a different story. Our owner Leighton swings a hammer into our 1/2 inch thick CAT D Series door on camera, unedited. The door takes it. That is the protection standing between you and whatever the brush cutter throws back.
Problem 3: No warranty, no backup
Salvage sales are almost always as-is. That is fair, it is how the business works. But it means the moment you hand over your money, every risk is yours. Cracked glass in week two? Yours. Latch fails and the door swings into the boom? Yours.
A new door from us carries a limited lifetime warranty against door failure or breakage, which means one free replacement for life for the original owner, under normal conditions. Hardware is covered for 3 months. That is the difference between buying a part and buying a part with a company standing behind it.
The real cost, side by side
| Used OEM glass door | New poly door from us | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Varies by yard, sold as-is | $1,395 to $1,795 by make and model |
| Fit | Cut for one donor machine, you verify | CNC-cut for your make and model |
| Window | Tempered glass, unknown history | Heavy-duty polycarbonate |
| Hardware | Whatever is still bolted on | New handle, latch, hinges, seal included |
| Warranty | None | Limited lifetime warranty on the door, 3 months on hardware |
| Shipping | Freight quote or a road trip | UPS 3 Day Air, $150 flat, typically 3 business days (not guaranteed) |
| Your time | Days of calls, listings, and yard visits | Ordered in minutes |
Run your own numbers with your own freight and your own hourly rate. Once everything is counted, the gap between a used glass door and a new poly door is smaller than the price tags suggest. What never shrinks is the difference in what you get for it.
When a used door does make sense
We build new doors, but we will be straight with you. A used door can be the right call when all four of these line up:
- It came off the exact same make, model, and series as your machine, and you can prove it.
- You can inspect it in person before paying.
- Glass, frame, hinges, seal, and latch all pass the checklist above.
- The price is low enough that you can accept zero warranty without flinching.
If all four check out, take the deal. The trouble is most buyers get three out of four, talk themselves into it, and regret it within a season.
What’s in the box with a new door
Every door we ship arrives complete. No trips to the hardware store, no measuring, all hardware included.
- CNC-cut heavy-duty polycarbonate door, precision fit to your make and model
- Handle and locking latch with keys
- Hinges
- Weather seal gasket
- All nuts, bolts, and washers
Want more from the same order? Electric wiper kits, cab heaters, side window panels, LED light bars, and door frame kits for machines that never came with a factory door are all available. A Bobcat M Series door with a heater and wiper turns an open cab into a machine you can run all winter.
Older machines: the salvage trap
Here is the real reason most people hunt for a used skid steer door. They run an older machine, the dealer quit supporting it years ago, and salvage feels like the only option left.
It is not. We build new doors for older and obsolete machines nobody else covers. A Case 1845C door is $1,395, brand new, CNC-cut, complete with hardware, and covered by the same limited lifetime warranty as every door we make. No yard hunting, no crossed fingers.
If that is your situation, our guide to skid steer doors for older machines walks through what we build and how to match it to your serial number.
The bottom line
A used skid steer door asks you to bet on three unknowns at once: fit, condition, and what happens when it fails. A new precision-cut poly door removes all three for about the same money once everything is counted. You get a door built for your exact machine, glass protection that tempered glass cannot match, and one free replacement for life if the door ever fails or breaks as the original owner under normal conditions.
Your machine earns its keep every day. Put a door on it that does the same.
