What Is Lexan Polycarbonate? A Skid Steer Owner's Guide

Lexan is a brand name for polycarbonate, a clear thermoplastic that resists impact far better than glass or acrylic. The name works the way Kleenex does for tissue: Lexan is one company’s trade name, polycarbonate is the material itself. Instead of shattering when something hits it, polycarbonate flexes, absorbs the blow, and springs back. That is why the same material shows up in jet canopies, machine guards, and face shields. And it is why we build every skid steer door we sell from it.

Here is what the material actually is, how it stacks up against plexiglass and glass, and what that means when you are the one sitting in the cab.

Is Lexan the same as polycarbonate?

Yes. Polycarbonate is the material. Lexan is the trade name it was first sold under, and the name stuck the same way Kleenex and Crescent wrench did. The material came out of a GE lab in the 1950s, and it changed what engineers could do with clear panels. For the first time, there was something you could see through like glass but that could take a real hit and stay in one piece.

Today several companies make polycarbonate sheet under different trade names. When an operator says “a Lexan door,” he means a polycarbonate door. You will see both terms on our site because buyers search for both. The material is the same.

One thing to watch. “Lexan” and “plexiglass” get tossed around like they mean the same thing, and they do not. Plexiglas is a trade name for acrylic, a different plastic with very different behavior. More on that below, because the mix-up costs people real money.

What makes polycarbonate tough

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic built from long, tangled molecular chains. When something hits the sheet, those chains stretch and slide instead of snapping. Engineers call that behavior ductile. In plain terms, the sheet bends, soaks up the strike, and springs back into shape.

Glass and acrylic are the opposite. They are stiff and brittle. They resist a load right up to their limit, then fail all at once, with no warning and no second chances.

A few more traits matter on a machine door:

  • Clear like glass, so you keep a full view of the attachment
  • Less than half the weight of glass at the same thickness
  • Holds its impact strength in summer heat and deep winter cold
  • Can be CNC-cut and formed to exact shapes without cracking
  • Softer surface than glass, so it needs sensible cleaning habits

That last point is the honest tradeoff, and we get to it below.

Lexan vs plexiglass: not the same thing

At the hardware store, the clear sheets all look alike. They do not act alike.

Acrylic, the material behind the Plexiglas name, is fine for the jobs it was made for. Storm windows, picture frames, display cases. It costs less than polycarbonate, looks a touch shinier, and resists light scratching a bit better.

But acrylic is brittle. Hit it hard and it cracks or shatters, and it gets more brittle as the temperature drops. A sheet that shrugs off a knock in July can split from the same knock in January. That is why acrylic has no business on the front of a machine running a mulcher or pushing snow.

Polycarbonate is the impact material. It costs more than acrylic because it does a harder job. If someone offers you a bargain “Lexan” door priced like a storm window, ask what the sheet actually is.

Why polycarbonate is the material for machine doors

Think about where a skid steer door sits. It faces the attachment. Every mulcher head, brush cutter, grapple, and bucket you run throws material straight back at the cab. The door is the only thing between your face and whatever comes off that attachment.

Brittle materials are the wrong answer for that job. Tempered glass is strong until the one strike that lets the whole panel go at once. Acrylic cracks, and cracks worse in the cold. Polycarbonate treats an impact as its job. It flexes, absorbs the energy, and stays in the frame, which means you stay protected and usually keep working.

Impact is not the only win. A solid polycarbonate door closes up the cab, and that enclosure helps regulate cab temperature, so you are not frozen out in January or baked out in July. The honest tradeoffs

No material wins everything, and we would rather you hear the downsides from us.

Polycarbonate scratches easier than glass. The surface is softer, so dragging a dry, gritty rag across it will leave swirl marks over time. The fix is habit, not money. It costs more than acrylic. That is the price of a material that absorbs strikes instead of cracking. You are paying for the one day it matters.

And you may have heard that clear plastic yellows in the sun. Quality polycarbonate sheet is made with UV protection to resist yellowing. The horror stories almost always trace back to cheap uncoated sheet, which is one more reason to ask what you are actually buying.
